Inexpensive Fixes for Your North Shores, IL Drafty Windows

Conserving Heat inexpensively through your home's windows
No doubt about it, winters get downright cold in the North Shores, IL area. But while it is cold outside, your North Shores home doesn’t have to be. Did you know that between 10 and 25 percent of your home’s heat escapes through the windows?  And while sometimes the best solution to a drafty home is replacing the windows, this can be a very costly project and one that isn’t always feasible.  Here are some DIY ideas to lessening the heat that escapes through you’re the windows in your North Shores home.

Plastic Film
There is plastic film you can buy that you apply to the window using double-sided tape and the heat from a hair dryer. This plastic wrap can be as inexpensive as $13 for two three packs and retains as much as 55% of the room’s heat.

Draft Snake
You may not have known the name for these helpful gadgets but you have surely seen them before. Draft snakes can be used under doors or in windowsills and are tubes of fabric filled with dry rice. It is also fairly simple and inexpensive to make a draft snake yourself. These help prevent cold air from coming through the windowsills and under doorways.

Foam
For basement or attic windows that you don’t need to see out of, use a piece of foam board glued to a piece of drywall that is 3/8 inch thick and cover the pain with this. When you want sunlight, you can simply pop the piece of drywall out of the window.

Perhaps now with the holidays over, you are considering listing your North Shores, IL home or searching for one that better fits your family’s definition of a dream home. Now is a perfect time to list your home. With years of experience as a North Shores realtor, it would be my pleasure to work with you.
