Labor Day Weekend on Chicago’s North Shore

Celebrating the Last Weekend of Summer

North Shore Real Estate
Labor Day on the North Shore

We’ve had a lovely summer on Chicago’s North Shore, but it’s almost time to welcome fall once again. Since Labor Day is the unofficial end of summer, everyone should get out and experience what the North Shore has to offer. No matter which community you live in, there is plenty happening. Here are 4 fun-filled events this Labor Day weekend on the North Shore.

Labor Day Weekend Concerts at Ravinia

The concert series at Ravinia will come an end for the season later in September. If you haven’t already, this coming weekend is a great opportunity to get out there and enjoy some phenomenal live music performances. Friday night features Michael McDonald and Toto, while Saturday offers Billy Corgan or the jazz stylings of pianist Dan Tepfer. Sunday and Monday both feature classic pianists, Andrew von Oeyen and Alexandra Silocea, respectively. Tickets are still available for all shows.

Closing Weekend at the North Shore Beaches

Our local beaches are about to close for the season. With over a dozen North Shore beaches to choose from, maybe you should take the opportunity to visit one that you haven’t before for one final day of beach fun this summer! Pack a blanket, a picnic and some sunscreen, and go enjoy the lakefront before you have to wait until next season.

Art Fair on the Square

On Sunday, August 31st and Monday, September 1st, The Deer Path Art League hosts its 60th annual art festival. This event will feature specialty art booths, an interactive children's art tent, the entrepreneurial Young Artists gallery, the Emerging Artists area and more. The event is held at Market Square in Lake Forest and will begin at 10am both days.

The Mousetrap Machine Show

Don't miss this special one-time live performance at the Winnetka Community House on August 31st at 4pm. In this science themed stage show, Smarty Pants transforms his award winning balloons into working levers, wheels, pulleys, inclined planes and screws. Your child may even have the chance to participate on stage, as the show requires over 25 volunteers. The show also ties directly into the science curriculum for Illinois.

This is just a handful of the ongoings on the North Shore this weekend. While Labor Day may mean that summer is coming to an end, the North Shore will keep buzzing long into the fall and winter. That’s the beauty of Chicago’s North Shore — no matter what time of year it is, there is always something happening here. It’s one of the many things that makes the North Shore such a wonderful place to live.

Featuring artifacts, photos, documents and other items that have been transported through the generations, a visit to the Illinois Holocaust Museum is an educational and powerful experience that is not to be missed!

5 Summertime Activities for Families on the North Shore!

The summertime months on Chicago’s North Shore are some of the best. With so much diversity, culture and activity, residents know that there is always something for everyone. No matter which North Shore community you may live in, there are plenty of outdoor summertime activities for families throughout the area. From along the scenic lakefront in Winnetka and Evanston through the safe, welcoming communities of Highland Park, Glenview, Lake Forest and Lincolnshire, families flock to purchase North Shore real estate. As an experienced North Shore Realtor, I can attest to the area’s gold standard of living – From award-winning schools and safe communities to plenty of options for dining, shopping and entertainment, many homebuyers have utilized my professional experience and local expertise to find the North Shore community just right for them.

Because Chicago’s North Shore is so popular with families, I wanted to take the opportunity to highlight some perfect local summertime activities for those with children of all ages. Here are some great ideas for enjoying the warm weather and bright sunshine outside with the kids!

  1. Fly High on the Trapezes at The Flying Gaonas Gym. A perfect way to get out of the house, be active and get that thrill-seeking adrenaline rush, this trapeze and circus arts school in Winnetka’s Hubbard Woods Park is ideal for kids searching for adventure. Offering a variety of classes, from first-time trapeze sessions to intermediate lessons, this unique experience is sure to be a memorable one! Find out more about The Flying Gaonas Gym by clicking here.
  2. Spend a Day at the Chicago Botanic Garden. There’s a reason that the Chicago Botanic Garden is well-known not just throughout the North Shore, but through all of Illinois. Beautiful displays of flowers, foliage and plants light up miles of gardens and walking trails with bold colors and photo opportunities at every turn. The Chicago Botanic Garden also offers many special events and exhibitions, which you can discover by visiting their website.
  3. Pack a Picnic and Head to Ravinia. Located in Highland Park, Ravinia is a beautiful outdoor theatre that pushes appreciation of art and community. Whether you plan to bring the kids to see a special concert or simply soak up local music by a variety of artists, be sure to pack a picnic. Ravinia features all outdoor seating on its expansive lawn and bringing your own food, beverages, blankets and games to enjoy while listening to that day’s scheduled artist(s) is encouraged. See who is scheduled to perform by checking out their website.
  4. Explore the Picturesque Skokie Lagoons. Overlapping from Glencoe into Winnetka, this expansive nature preserve is a relaxing spot to walk, bike, fish, boat and bird-watch. Seven inter-connected lagoons provide ample scenic beauty while two bike paths wind around the bodies of water. Because the lagoons are shallow, typically 10 feet deep or less, canoes, kayaks and rowboats are available to rent and enjoy. Find out more from the Cook County Forest Preserve District
  5. Discover The Grove’s Wetlands and Nature Museum. The Grove is a well-known area of land preserved in the village of Glenview. Encompassing 123 acres, there are miles of walking trails that are meticulously preserved by the Park District. The nature museum is home to a rich source of local history and environmental knowledge. An ideal place for a relaxing walk or to simply enjoy the North Shore’s beautiful summer weather, you can learn more about The Grove at their website
I hope that many of you are able to get out and enjoy much of what the North Shore has to offer! Whether you’re interested in buying North Shore real estate and moving to the area or you’re a longtime resident, please contact me with any questions. I’ve been a North Shore Realtor for many years and am always available to buyers and sellers throughout these fantastic communities.

- Glencoe’s 4th of July celebration is an all day, fun-filled event that’s great for the whole family!  Starting at 8am, you can participate in the 2 mile Rotary Fun Run to get your energy up for the day.  An art fair on the Village Green, Children’s Carnival and parade are just a few of the events taking place during the day.  In the evening, find yourself digging for buried treasure at the Patriotic Treasure Hunt at Glencoe Beach!  The night continues with contests, children’s entertainment and fireworks on the beach!  See the full schedule on the Glencoe Park Districts website
I hope you’re able to take part in a few of these events!  If you’re considering moving to the North Shore, participating in these festivities will help give you a better sense of what the community has to offer.
